The Partners

Joining industry and academics

ALGAESOLUTIONS brings together experts from different fields to address common challenges in algal biotechnology. The challenges include the scale-up, contaminants, and the value of algal biomass. The companies ALGAplus and Allmicroalgae provide their knowledge on industrial algal cultivation to improve growth, compound productivities and dealing with contamination. The research-driven institution UAlg provides scientific know-how in analytics, molecular techniques and alga-based experiments, advancing the current state-of-the-art. All partners are working close together with the researchers of GreenCoLab, having their expertise in LED-based reactor design, contaminant treatment and product development.

GreenCoLab, Faro, Portugal

Promotor [GreenCoLab]: GreenCoLab is a non-profit private organization a collaborative platform between research and industry, whose research & innovation agenda is based on the exploration of macro- and microalgae as an essential component for the food, feed, nutraceutical, bioenergy, wastewater and cosmetic industries. GreenCoLab is composed of one research centre (CCMAR), one state laboratory (LNEG), one university (UA) and four companies, namely ALLMICROALGAE, NECTON, ALGA+ and SPAROS with the common goal of advancing the R&D on the cultivation of algae and algal biomass downstream processing, with the ultimate objective of generating a portfolio of new commercial products and services for the industrial partners.

ALGAplus, Aveiro, Portugal

2nd Partner [ALGAPLUS]: ALGAPLUS is a Portuguese SME, created in 2011 with the aim of providing high-quality seaweed sustainably farmed in Europe for a growing international demand of this raw-material. Set in an on-shore 14ha property bathed by a seawater lagoon with recognized ecological value, our main innovation lies in the production system, a land-based Integrated MultiTrophic Aquaculture system. It allows us to provide our food, cosmetic and feed customers, year-round farmed Atlantic seaweed species, organic certified and with high levels of quality, security and traceability according to EU standards. ALGAPLUS currently produces 40 tons/year of fresh seaweed, sold internationally in different formats. In 2020, the production is targeted to reach 200tons. The company has a commercial scale nursery for Atlantic Nori species and we keep a culture collection for all the seaweed varieties in culture.
